A roller conveyor uses rollers as the basic mechanism for transporting goods from one place to another. Rollers are the most efficient way of moving goods from one place to another when the weight of the goods exceeds two hundred pounds.

As opposed to a belt conveyor where you can transport anything from small chunks and big bags, a roller conveyor depends on an individual roller to carry the goods forward, and hence, all the rollers have to move in sync. A roller conveyor and a belt conveyor share a lot of their underlying mechanism. However, the lack of a belt in the former is what distinguishes it from the latter.

The rollers are generally cylindrical tubes fitted inside a steel or metal frame. Conveyor rollers are made of different materials according to their purpose. Some rollers are made of stainless steel and are also corrosion resistant. Rollers used in printing, paper processing and metal rolling industries need a gripping surface come with a rubber coating which increases the grip. Rollers made of plastic are also suitable for lightweight items. Zinc plated tubes are used for grooved conveyor rollers.

There are also different types of rollers for different applications. Friction driven conveyor rollers comes with nylon sprockets do to the job.
